BBC 2010版翻拍《福尔摩斯探案集》把福尔摩斯的故事搬到了21世纪，剧名叫做 Sherlock (2010)，取自剧中主角福尔摩斯(Sherlock Holmes)的名，播出之后一起一片轰动和好评。中国的福尔摩斯粉丝也颇多，在中文网上对此剧的讨论也很热烈。

可是许多地方把此剧翻译成了《夏洛克》，或是《神探夏洛克》，难道这些人从来没有看过《福尔摩斯探案集》的系列小说中文版，不知道他的名字是翻译成“歇洛克·福尔摩斯”的？“歇洛克”不仅接近原音，而且已是约定成俗的译法。

更糟糕的是，“夏洛克”还是一个著名角色，就是莎士比亚戏剧《威尼斯商人》中那个贪婪而愚蠢的犹太商人。

2010年的环法自行车赛今天结束。在ITV网站上，有一首由 Harry Peterson 写的诗，名为 The Peloton，由ITV的环法自行车赛解说 Phil Liggett 朗读。

Multi-hued with speed imbued the peloton advances,

Of muscled limbs and flashing rims, shaded eyes and plastered thighs,

Toy Story 3 正在英国公映，这部片子受到广泛好评，BBC 的影评人 Mark Kermode 甚至称 Toy Story 系列是最优秀的三部曲系列－－三部都非常突出。

我想起了一个大众汽车的电影院广告系列，叫做 See Films Differently，每段都让一名貌似普通人的角色重新诠释某部著名电影，Toy Story 也是其中之一，被诠释成“男人的用处是什么”，很好玩的。

在今年第8期的 Sight & Sound 杂志的刊首语上看到主编 Nick James 的这段话，觉得很有意思，还挺切时：

So many national causes are related to histories of victimhood, and the English can never cast themselves as victims (except in sporting terms).

确实，与其它国家相比，英国从来没法把自己设定为“受害者”，所以只有在体育竞赛上寻找“受伤”的感觉了。

Nick James 谈的是民族身份的建立，以及英国电影中对“过去”的构建。他提到了由法国人 Jacques Derrida 提出的新术语 hauntology，说的是1989年柏林墙倒下和共产国家纷纷崩溃之后，对马克思主义的“幽灵”的追寻和怀念。Hauntology 这一词由 haunt 和 onlogy 组合，灵感其实就是马克思在《共产党宣言》中的名言：

A spectre is haunting Europe, the spectre of communism.

Hauntology 被翻译成“幽灵学”、“闹鬼学”、“缠绕学”等等，我觉得“魂在论”可能比较好些。

Simon Hoggart’s Week 是《卫报》的“议会写生员”(parliament sketch writer)－－专职报道议会发生的新闻和趣闻－－的周六专栏，一般是几则传闻花絮和小故事小笑话等，看起来十分轻松。

这是上周六中的一则有关英国报纸对狐狸与移民报道的相似性的精辟的观察：

Have you noticed how the coverage of urban foxes – including the ones who are thought to have horribly wounded two little girls in London – resembles what’s so often written about immigrants? They come over here, into our cities, they steal our food, they swagger down the street like hoodies, they know no fear, they ignore our way of life and the authorities seem powerless and unwilling to stop them. Do you think they might be a sort of stand-in?

另外一则是前一周上的小笑话，有关正在竞选工党领袖的 Miliband 兄弟的：

Now that David Miliband is standing for Labour leader, and we learn that his brother Ed might stand against him, it’s time to reprise the great line from Linda McDougall, the wife of Austin Mitchell MP, and a family friend of Ralph Miliband. “I’m afraid I can’t take either of the Miliband brothers seriously. I changed both their nappies.”

英国两位社会流行病(social epidemiology)专家 Richard Wilkinson 和 Kate Pickett 的著作 The Spirit Level 在去年出版后引起了很大反响。这本书的主要论点是证明当社会达到一定的富裕程度之后，经济的继续增长就与人民幸福程度脱钩了，而社会平等程度越高，人民的身体和精神健康程度越好。

这本书的书名，如果要翻译成中文，第一个让人想到的是“精神层面”，在FT中文网的一篇翻译文章中，就是用的这个翻译。然而，这本书实在不是讨论“精神层面”，而是在讨论社会平等。书中还提到了现代社会中，人们似乎已经放弃让社会更平等的努力，而是试图用“自我精神治疗”来解除因社会不平等带来的精神压力，这正是作者们反对的东西。

我没有看到两位作者解释书名的材料，无法得知他们起这个书名的用意。但是可以从 spirit level 的另一个意思上猜测：spirit level 是一种用水中的一个气泡来测量表面是否水平的水平仪。这本书所做的，是通过分析各种调查数据，来确立社会收入均衡与九项代表人民幸福程度的指标之间的关系，可以说是用数字来度量平等与社会问题，所以我在这篇为《南方都市报》写的文章中，建议用《平等指数》来作为这本书的中文书名。

从昨天开始的国际新闻头条是以色列海军在公海突袭驶往加沙地带的人道救援船队，引发冲突，造成至少9人死亡的新闻。在新闻中，对这一船队的称呼无一例外用的是 flotilla：指由小型船只组成的小型船队。

这一船队从土耳其出发，载有生活物资和生产工具(以色列方面有异议)，但并不能称为完全的“人道救援船队”，自称为 Freedom Flotilla，可见有一定政治倾向。而以 Flotilla 自称，应该是为了突显自己平民的性质和弱小的规模。

船队的最普通称呼是 fleet，自称 flotilla，是公关上的成功之举，媒体报道此一事件时可以用“flotilla raid”这样简洁的叫法，绝无歧义，却同时暗示被袭船队的“弱小”。

组织者还意外地打赢了另一场公关战：5月31日中午 Twitter 上的关键词标签 #flotilla 忽然从热榜上消失，引发了许多“Twitter 进行网络审查，删除 #flotilla”的传闻，直到 Twitter 出面回应，称是由技术原因造成，正在内部调查云云。

大概正因为 Flotilla 这一称呼的微妙，善于公关的以色列官方不太愿意用这个词，外交部副部长 Danny Ayalon 的说法是“The armada of hate and violence”。Armada 特指的是海军舰队，以色列人显然是故意用这个词来暗示对方是有武装和带着敌意的，试图否定起“和平人道”的形象。

在前天的 BBC Breakfast 上，一位嘉宾在谈及最近的英国“热浪”造成有人晒伤的新闻时，用了“lobsterised”一词，用以形容皮肤被太阳晒得通红，如同煮熟的龙虾一般。

除了在口语和网络博客外，目前我还没见到新闻报道中出现这个词。这个词只有被动形式的形容词。

和其它 -rised 词尾一样，这个词也出现了美式的 lobsterized 和英式的 lobsterised 两种形式，在搜索结果中，lobsterized 出现的频率远远高于 lobsterised。

其实 lobsterised 还有另一个意思，与晒伤无关，是指如何形状如龙虾一样的盔甲，比如在形容电影 Iron Man 2 中的盔甲时，就有说是 lobsterized armor 的。

Operation Mincemeat 是一部军事历史小说，不过其中也有一小段浪漫故事。作者 Ben Macintyre 在讲述这一行动中的一个角色，英国海军潜艇“六翼天使号”(Seraph)的艇长 Bill Jewell 的求爱行动时，用了许多海军军事词汇，十分幽默：

Once Bill Jewell had spotted Rosemary on his emotional periscope, he pursued her with unswerving determination. p275

For two joyful weeks, he had wooed her with every weapon at his disposal: French food, an American swimming pool and a British car with doors that wouldn’t open. Rosemary was in no mind to resist, and at the end of his sustained bombardment she had sunk, unresistingly, into Lieutenant Jewell’s arms. p276

Bill Jewell 和 Rosemary Galloway 于 1944年6月结婚，在以后的54年里，“absolutley devoted to one another”。 p322

英国的 Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy 在5月7日大选投票日第二天在《卫报》上独家刊登的诗，标题是 Democracy
