2009年只有一种念法 two thousand and nine，2010年可以念作 two thousand and ten，但是更常用的念法是 twenty ten。

刚从中国来到英国的人，很多都会疑惑：怎么英国有那么多 CCTV？

以下这段从 BBC Radio 4 的喜剧节目 Just A Minute 的录音片段做成的动画片会告诉你答案－－如果没有让你更糊涂的话。

已经进入第22天的英国下议院议员(MP)的 expenses scandal 在英国是绝对的头条新闻，但在英国以外的地方，大概更多的诧异英国人的大惊小怪。在对这一事件的中文翻译上，也出现了不同用法。BBC中文网译作“议员浮报开支”，国内一些中文媒体译作“议员报销丑闻”，我一直用的是“议员津贴丑闻”。

用“津贴”而不是“报销”，是因为这里的所谓 expense 其实是议员的 second home allowance，即议会管理当局向议员提供津贴，让议员能有第二个住所，以便议会工作之需。过去议会管理当局鼓励议员用各种名目获得这些津贴，甚至低于250英镑的都不需要提供任何收据。因为议会管理当局几乎把这一“津贴”当作对议员工资的补偿，才会在报销手续上如此含糊，只要一年内不超过封顶的 24000英镑左右即可。过去3周以来《每日电讯报》披露出来，闹得沸沸扬扬的，主要就是这个津贴 (allowance)；而议员的全部“开支”(expense)，包括办公用具、雇佣助手、旅行费用和宣传费用，加起来是远远高于这个数字的。

根据流行的加 -gate 的做法，似乎可以把这场丑闻称做 expanse gate，但实际上英国媒体较少采用这个用法，BBC 和《每日电讯报》的标题就是简单的 MPs’ expenses。倒是有人用 trouser gate，源自“trouser the money”的俚语，指钱来得有点不明不白，这里有很好的解释。

今天的《泰晤士报》苏格兰版的头版新闻是关于 swine flu (英格兰版的头版头条不同，是关于黑人遭遇警察搜查比率最高)，原因是在苏格兰出现的怀疑病例。其中有一段说：

The figures include 27 “possible” and the single “probable” case in Scotland.

Possible 和 probable 都是“可能”，显出中文表达“可能”程度的词汇缺乏。Possible 是“可能”，是指假设某种联系的存在，是因为不能证明它不存在；而 probable 是在 possible 基础上排除了一些无关因素，倾向于认为某种联系的确可能存在，是“更可能”、“更象是”，但中文中似乎找不到一个合适和简单的说法。

有的时候还会看到 possbile but not probable 的用法，是为了强调虽然不能证明某种联系不存在，但这种联系的存在可能性不大。

(《泰晤士报》的这篇文章我在他们的网站上找不到，不知道是因为这篇文章中的部份信息已经过时－－上面这起 probable 的病例已经在今天下午被证实是猪流感，还是因为这是苏格兰版上的文章。)

今天在BBC Radio 5 Live 的新闻更新 newsflash 上看到短短一行字：

England defend the selection of King

难道英格兰要另立中央，选择自己的国王？而且已经引起冲突(假设是和现任大不列颠和北爱尔兰王国女王)，要采取防御姿态？

其实这是典型的缩略句，全句应该是

England national football team defend the selection of Ledley King as a member of the team.

在体育报道中，用 England、France 等国家名代表英格兰队、法国队是通行的做法。这个缩略句还玩了另一个小花招，defend - Ledley King 的位置是中卫或前卫，是一个典型的防守队员 defender。

《泰晤士报》3月4日头版标题：

在同一期的读者反馈上，《泰晤士报》的Sally Baker说自从上周有读者指出 in the firing line 是指“开火”而不是“被打”之后，又有读者来信说，in the firing line 也可以用来形容“被打”，证据是在《牛津简明英语辞典》上：

The Concise OED definition of ‘in the firing line‘ is: ‘1. The front line of troops in a battle; 2. A position where one is subject to criticism or blame.’

但是显然Sally Baker的字典(Collins English Dictionary)上没有这种说法。《卫报》的“文字规范”(Style guide)显然支持她的观点。原因很简单：他们用的同一本字典。

我其实一直有这个疑惑，在适用 None of these 这样的词组时，后面跟的动词照理应该是单数形式，但是 None of them has this skill 这样的句子看上去不是太顺眼。这个星期六《泰晤士报》的读者反馈上 Sally Baker 对此进行了一番调查发现：

It is a mistake to suppose that the pronoun is singular only and must at all costs be followed by singular verbs or pronouns.

以及：

Use a singular verb where possible but if the notion of plurality is present a plural verb has been optional since the OE period and in some circumstances is desirable. The type ‘none of them have finished their essays’ is better than the clumsy ‘…has finished his or her essay’.

原来 None of these, None of them 这样的词组之后的动词，可以适用单数形式，也可以适用复数形式，取决于上下文。

我又查了《卫报》的“文字规范”(Style guide)，同样写道：

It is a (very persistent) myth that “none” has to take a singular verb: plural is acceptable and often sounds more natural, eg “none of the current squad are good enough to play in the Premiership”, “none of the issues have been resolved”

《泰晤士报》负责读者反馈的编辑 Sally Baker 在星期六的专栏中有这么一段：

Allowed a front-page headline “Bankers in the firing line” when, as Robert Colbeck, among others, pointed out: “If you are in the firing line you are the one doing the shooting. If you are being shot at (presumably the image the headline-writer was striving for) you are either under fire or in the line of fire.”

原来我也一直以为 in the firing line 是指“面对炮火”，遭到攻击的意思。经以上这位读者解释，in the firing line 其实是指处于“射击线”上向目标开火。一个是被打，一个个打别人，意义大相径庭。

但是把这个意思搞错的不只《泰晤士报》一家，几个例子：

Daily Mail: Defenc funding in the firing line 说得是国防开支缩减

但在 BBC网站上的新闻标题是用对了这个词组：
