Play With Words

英国政府宣布将认可几家大公司给自己的员工授予的培训证书，给予这些证书类似 A-Level 或其它政府授予的职业证书的地位。这几家公司之一是麦当劳，于是报纸上出现了 McQualification 字样。这项宣布符合布朗政府“鼓励学徒制”的政策，并称这几个大公司都有完善的员工培训计划。

就在半年多前，麦当劳还自己制造新闻，高调要求牛津英语辞典更新其对 McJob 的释义。牛津英语辞典中解释 McJob 为“无激励作用的、少有前景的低工资工作” (an unstimulating low-paid job with few prospects)。麦当劳除要求修改 McJob 定义之外，还自制新词 McProspect 对抗。

The Guardian 记者 Mark Brown 在报道英格兰艺术理事局 (Arts Council of England)的CEO Peter Hewitt 面对英国演员工会质询时，用了 thrown to the wolves 这个很形象的短语：

Peter Hewitt, the council’s outgoing chief executive, was in many ways thrown to the wolves as he appeared on stage while actors listened in the audience. The wolves in this case had outstanding projection, timbre and timing.

这个短语的使用还是很频繁的。我记得在 BBC 的剧集 Spooks 第4季最后一集，Harry曾威胁反叛的前特工，如果她不听从安排，“we throw you to the wolves”。

在BBC 2007拍摄的电视剧 Fanny Hill 中，女主角回忆说“I enjoyed the gay life in Mrs Cole’s”。Fanny Hill 写于十八世纪，但其实直到不久前，gay 仍然经常用来形容“快乐、喜悦”等。在 David Lean 1945 拍摄的《相见恨晚》(Brief Encounter)中，我听到女主角至少两次说道“I felt delighted and gay”和“I was reckless and gay”。

今天一位年轻的妈妈把自己差不多才一岁的女儿带进了 BBC 的新闻演播室接受有关NHS产后护士短缺问题的采访。主播 Huw Edwards 对年轻的妈妈说她的女儿 looks bonny and healthy。

Bonny 是个苏格兰俚语，用以形容“漂亮”、“好”。在英国电影 The Gentle Sex (1943) 中，其中的一位来自格拉斯哥的女主角 Maggie ，在舞会上遇到一个穿格子裙的苏格兰兵。两人一见钟情，苏格兰兵含情脉脉地对 Maggie 说 “You are bonny!” 不过现代的用法，大部份是用在形容小孩子，相当于 pretty，cute。

Bonny 的另一种写法是 bonnie。在 BBC 刚刚播完的电视剧 Cranford (2007) 中，Jessie 和情人 Major Gordon 一起唱苏格兰民谣 Loch Lomond，其中一句是：

On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond

今天《卫报》副刊G2上的一篇有关 Jodie Foster comes out 的文章，其中有这一句：

In other words, if you didn’t already know this, you seriously need retune your gaydar.

我还真是第一次见到 gaydar 这次词，这应该是个美国俚语，来源于 gay-radar，在英国好像用得不多－－当然这是我孤陋寡闻了，原来英国还有个很有名的 gay dating 网站就叫 Gaydar，据说很受欢迎，连自己的电台都有了，就叫 Gaydar Radio。

星期天上午的 BBC1 Andrew Marr 节目中，圣公会约克大主教 Sentamu 在直播现场取下自己的教士领圈，拿起剪刀把它剪成碎片，称津巴布韦总统 Mugabe 的所作所为，正在“剪碎”他的身份象征(cut my identity into pieces)。Mugabe 不下台，他就不再戴领圈。

教士领圈叫做 clerical collar，圣公会和天主教会的教士都戴它。Clerical collar 俗称 dog collar (狗领圈)。让我好奇的是，为什么多年来大众都用这个似乎有点不敬的 dog collar 作为教士领圈的代名词呢？连剪领圈的 Sentamu 也在电视上说了 dog collar 。

Shibboleth 是哥伦比亚艺术家 Doris Salcedo 在伦敦 Tate Modern 的“轮机房大厅”(Turbine Hall)的作品。Turbine Hall 中的作品，可以任凭作者想像，限制只是这个原电站轮机房内部巨大的空间，一年换一次。Shibboleth 是第7届作品。

Shibboleth (Oxford English Dictionary):

a word used as a test for detecting people from another district or country by their pronunciation; a word or a sound very difficult for foreigners to pronounce correctly.

Shibboleth 的来源是：

The Old Testament relates that the Ephraimites were trying to cross the river Jordan when they were caught by their sworn enemies the Gileadites, who forced them all to say the word “shibboleth”. Since the unfortunate Ephraimites’ dialect did not include the sound “sh”, this allowed the Gileadites to identify and slaughter large numbers of Ephraimites.

Shibboleth 是件真正利用 Turbine Hall 空间的作品：大厅混凝土地面上的一条裂缝。大厅入口处的垃圾桶地下开始，是地面上的一条细小的裂缝，细缝向厅内延伸，越变越大，在某处分成两支，最粗之处成人可以伸入手臂－－但深不能见底。

这件作品，是如何做出来的？难道真是在 Tate Modern 地面上凿出一条裂缝？艺术馆表示绝不会透露内幕。不过上周《卫报》上有篇非常精彩的介绍文章，而且最后还会透露这件作品的制作秘密。

几乎所有的护肤品化妆品，如果你看包装上的成份标注，第一项都是 Aqua。Aqua 这个词很美，听上去也很优雅。Aqua 来源拉丁语，现代的某些语言，比如意大利语中，还在使用。它的意思是……水。

英国的 Boots 出售的“专业敏感面部清新喷雾” －－Expert Sensitive Refreshing Facial Spritz，号称 “gentle facial spritz specially formulated to refresh and hydrate. Hypoallergenic and fragance-free it instantly cools and refreshens skin. Lanolin free. Dermatologically tested”。以喷雾罐形式出售，每罐125毫升，售价 3.99 镑。它的成份只有一种：Aqua。
