美国总统奥巴马在白宫记者晚餐会(White House correspondents’ dinner)上的演出。这个一年一度的晚餐会是华盛顿政治圈子内的一项传统，规矩是现任总统必须到场做一番诙谐演讲。在这个16分钟的演讲中，奥巴马以他就任100天内的许多事件为素材开了许多玩笑，在最后3分钟开始严肃起来，向在座的记者们致敬。

怎么形容女人胸大而不显得没礼貌呢？你称她们为 Busty，因为 bust 本身是一个比较中性的词。英国女子 Beckie Williams 在 Facebook 上建的组叫做 Busts 4 Justice，号召“busty ladies”团结起来，共同反抗英国零售商马莎(Marks & Spencer)。
事件起因是身材 busty 的 Beckie Williams 发现在马莎店出售的胸罩中，凡是超过 DD Cup 的都要多加2英镑，于是找马莎店理论。马莎店辩解说大号胸罩耗材多，做工要求高，但是 Beckie Williams 认为这是马莎店歧视 busty women，为什么不同码的衣服裤子都是一个价钱？于是在 Facebook 上建组反抗2英镑的“tit-tax”。用 tit (大多数场合用复数 tits)称呼女人乳房是比较粗俗的叫法，男人慎用。但女人用就有显得自己大胆粗放的意思，有一次刚出名的歌手 Lily Allen 在 BBC 的 Friday Night with Jonathan Ross 接受采访，就爆出一句“my mother’s tits are better”以显示其“飞女”本色。
Beckie Williams 显然不仅是用社会媒体进行公关的好手，还有推销员式的锲而不舍的劲头。她买了1股马莎店的股票，然后就去参加股东大会，与马莎店的董事会主席当面对质，扩大影响。
马莎店在经过一份抵抗之后，终于举手投降，宣布取消这2英镑的特别收费。不过马莎店的公关也十分成功，大肆宣扬自己的“失败”，上周五在各家报纸刊登广告，大字标题 We boobed，叠映在一位大胸女子的胸口。We boobed 显然是来自 We bombed (我们失败了)，而 boob 是乳房的另一个称呼，原来比较不上台面，但现在用得也越来越多，还出现 manboobs 的用法。

5月4日《泰晤士报》上有一篇 Michael Young 的采访。Michael Young 1980年代是供职于英国矿产公司Consilidated Goldfields的公关主任，在公司的暗中支持下(公司希望维护在南非的商业利益)，他积极努力，促成了当时的“恐怖组织”非洲人国民大会(ANC)的Thabo Mbeki 和代表南非白人(Afrikaner)的大学教授 Willie Esterhuyse 在英国的秘密谈判。最近表现这一历史事件的电视片 Endgame 在 Channel 4 播映。以下是 Michael Young 在采访中的一些话：
“The template that we’ve used, that has applicability elsewhere currently, is to identify players who are serious, not always visible, to bring them away so that they could begin to understand one another as human beings,”
“Then you are not operating on this global platform with lots of spotlights. It’s silent, it’s long term and if you want cheap thrills and brownie points, then you’ve lost it.”
但是我怀疑在当今媒体和网络无处不在的时代，保守秘密的可能性有多大。

《卫报》的Simon Hoggart 在描述 Joanna Lumley 接受英国下议院国内事务委员会(the Common’s home affairs committee)有关廓尔喀(Gurkha) 老兵移居英国的权利的质询时写道：
Mr Vaz asked solicitously whether a meeting with the prime minister would be helpful, and she replied with the single syllable “yes”, but a yes so freighted with emotion and passion and unrestrained longing, that I doubt if Elizabeth Bennett replying to Mr Darcy’s proposal could have carried more meaning.
今天她得偿所愿，与Gordon Brown 见了面。

奥地利游客 Klaus Matzka 和他的儿子在伦敦旅游期间，拍了一些双层巴士和汽车站的照片，结果在现场就有两个警察过来制止并要求删除数码相机中的照片，还记下了父子俩的身份护照资料，他们还称根据英国的反恐法，不允许拍摄公共交通设施。《卫报》的这篇报道引发了读者的强烈反应。Klaus Matzka 在写给卫报的信中说：

昨天写了一篇介绍 Alexandra Tolstoy 的博客，今天就看到《卫报》的电视评论栏目上，Sam Wollaston 花了全部篇幅来评论昨晚BBC2上的这个节目 Horse people with Alexandra Tolstoy。全文都是以这个女主持的口气写的，其中最有趣的是第二段：
Yes, I’m frightfully posh, in an English Sloane/Russian aristocrat kind of way. I’m so posh that I don’t wear makeup. But that’s OK because, haven’t you heard, it’s now officially cool to be posh. Telly can’t get enough of us. Posh is the new regional accent.
一直对posh这个词感兴趣，找不到合适的翻译，因为根据语境语气，这个posh可以是褒义、中性、调侃、反感、贬义，或是这几种感觉的混合。用“优雅”、“漂亮”等都不能给出这个词所携带的社会阶层概念。这段中还把她形容为“英国上流”和“俄罗斯贵族”的 posh，这就是其中的社会阶层含义了。

Daily Telegraph 的报道中说：
…like a fiery mistress, one can be awkawrd to handle, but is worth the trouble because of the great sensations.
是什么可以比作一个“热情似火的情妇”，“虽然难以驾驭，但却物有所值”？
这句话的前半句是：

Scyld Berry 报道的是板球比赛。
我当然不至于看 Daily Telegraph 的板球报道。但是还记得电影 The Beach (2000) 中的一个角色要求去城市补充货物的Leonardo DiCaprio带回 Daily Telegraph －－为的是上面的“板球消息”？上面这段报道给这个要求带来了全新的含义。
我是在《卫报》的 Media Monkey’s Dairy 看到这段话的－－出现在《卫报》上，当然是为了讽刺一下《每日电讯报》的读者群。

G20伦敦峰会在伦敦东郊的ExCel会议中心举行。这里是原来的伦敦港口码头(Dockland)，已经离伦敦市中心很远了，周围也很荒凉。《卫报》记者Simon Hoggart 在他的文章中把这个地方形容为 dark side of the moon – 无人居住，不见天日。
This summit took place on the dark side of the moon.
We…were ushered into a series of buses, swept past driverless trains, deserted roundabouts, abandoned building sites, empty docks, with not a single human being visible except for groups of police, holding back nobody.
《泰晤士报》记者 Ann Treneman (她和 Simon Hoggart 一样，正职都是“议会写生员” – parliament stretch writer，专门描写议会活动的) 没有直接写会议中心周围的景物，而是说：
The best way to explain the ExCel centre is to imagine a giant tin can on its side. We could not see out, which, given the view, may not have been such a bad thing.
举行多边首脑峰会时，选择偏远、交通不便的会址，然后在离会场很远的地方就设立警戒线，挡住示威者，已经成为主办方惯用的手段。

Making money cheaper 调低利率，希望贷款利息降低
Lending money to banks 政府借钱给银行，希望银行再借给客户
Giving money to banks 政府向银行注资，希望银行不会垮掉
Insuring against bad loans 政府为坏账提供担保，希望银行摆脱坏账，恢复功能
Spending more money 政府多花钱或少说税，希望个人口袋里钱增多，刺激消费投资
以上各招都不见效的话，就只有最后一招：
