Depression

今天首相布朗在“首相答问时间”(PMQ)上,说了这个 D-word: depression

We should agree, as a world, on a monetary and fiscal stimulus that will take the world out of depression.

虽然英国已经正式进入“衰退”(recession),到目前还没有人用“大萧条”(depression)。什么是 depression,没有明确的定义,但一般用以形容长期的经济衰退、高失业率、和对经济前景的信心低迷。上次的 depression 是美国30年代的大萧条 The Great Depression。

我今天在PMQ现场,但就完全没有听到这个词。但在事后,保守党影子财相 George Osborne 要求首相府澄清布朗对这个词的使用,首相府发言人马上回应说是布朗“说漏嘴了”(a slip of the tongue),布朗想说的是 recession。

对一个 depression 用词的计较,反映了英国对经济前景的担忧。

dither

这几个月来,dither 这个词成了保守党最爱挂在嘴边的词了。用 dither 来形容现任财相 Alistair Darling,当然是为了对应工党首相布朗的“精明强干”的形象。就象布朗十年前爱用 prudent,现在保守党希望反复使用 dither ,最后可以深入人心。

今天 Alistair Darling 终于宣布将对 Northern Rock 进行国有化了,保守党影子财相 George Osborne 在回应中更是一口一个 dither

After months of dither and delay we have ended up with this catastrophic decision.

连一直宣扬 Northern Rock 国有化的自由民主党财政发言人 Vince Cable 也开始说 dither 了

The Government has dithered. It has wasted time and money.

慌乱,紧张,犹豫,颤抖
